About this Pagosa river dashboard & its data sources
Maintained by Pagosa Outside, a local river outfitter in downtown Pagosa Springs, Colorado. This dashboard brings San Juan River flow, official forecasts, mountain precipitation and snowpack into one working view.
Measured flow: USGS gauge 09342500 reports discharge in cubic feet per second (CFS). The observation time belongs to the measurement, not the time this page was opened. Older or saved readings are identified; provisional measurements may be revised.
Forecast flow: CBRFC guidance for PSPC2 describes the expected river trajectory. A forecast crest is an estimate, not an observed peak. Use the source buttons above to open the agencies’ own pages and check issue times.
Headwaters: Upper San Juan and Wolf Creek Summit SNOTEL stations provide snow water equivalent (SWE), snow depth and precipitation context. SWE measures water held in snow; it is not snow depth. Station measurements do not represent every part of the basin.
Watershed map: Rain shows SNOTEL precipitation water (rain plus melted snow), with exact rolling 24-hour or 5-day endpoints. A gauge reset or missing endpoint withholds the total. Temperature and Snow show each station’s own observation time; older readings are labeled. CoCoRaHS neighborhood markers show dated daily gauge catches, including melted snow. Older or saved reports are identified. Five-day totals require all five consecutive morning reports ending with the current reporting day; they are withheld if a day is missing. These daily windows differ from rolling SNOTEL totals. Trace precipitation is displayed as trace rather than zero. Local rain retrieval runs independently of the core dashboard feeds, with a timeout and direct-source links. The map uses OpenStreetMap roads and rivers and the CBRFC Pagosa forecast-basin outline. It does not estimate rainfall between stations or calculate a forecast from these markers.
The dashboard supports interpretation; flow thresholds alone do not establish trip availability or river conditions along every reach. For explanations and activity guidance, open the River Desk. Experimental longer-range predictions are in the Black Hat Hydrology Lab.
